Spirit of the Streets Choir is a not-for-profit, community choir in its 10th year of operation. It is a unique choir aimed at providing an environment where people from all walks of life and all social backgrounds can come together in song and friendship. It is a choir where people who experience social disadvantage, isolation and often stigma because of their circumstances would otherwise not be able to enjoy the benefits of singing.
Our membership is made up of people who perhaps experience homelessness, mental health issues, recovery from addiction and physical, sensory or neurological disability. The Choir provides not only an environment for enjoying the health benefits of singing, but the opportunity to build social networks and friendships that may not be possible in their lives.
Many of our members have dual diagnoses, one component of which is negative mental health issues. Research has shown that singing and being a member of a Choir, is a fun way of improving one’s health, both physically and mentally. It not only exercises the lungs and releases feel good endorphins, but produces oxytocin, known to reduce anxiety and depression.
SOS welcomes everyone as active members of a performing choir in a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental environment, whether they are able to sing or think that they can’t sing. Our membership is drawn from all over Perth and there are no barriers to participation.
The Choir provides an atmosphere that takes the message of unity and social acceptance through singing to the broader community. The Choir performs gigs at not-for-profit organisations, corporate offices, social events for corporates, community organisations, local councils, government organisations, aged care facilities and a variety of other venues.
